  I admit, I neglected my mouth for about 8 years. I finally mustered up the courage and decided that I would stop living in denial. In 2003, after seeing a general Dentist, I was told a Periodontist would be necessary. I chose Dr. Barry Blank because of his location and insurance. At my first appointment with Dr. Blank, I was already VERY vulnerable and somewhat traumatized as I had NO idea how bad my teeth and mouth health had gotten, or so I thought. I had three appointments with Dr. Blank. The first was a consultation, the second was x-rays and prognosis and the third was the deep scale cleaning. On the second visit, after x-rays were taken, Dr. Blank walked in and without many other words informed me that ALL of my upper teeth needed to come out, but he was going to try to save the bottom. I was only 29 years old and never anticipated how bad the news would be. I began sobbing pretty much hysterically. He asked me why I was crying and then said that he could save the bottom teeth. To say I became depressed is an understatement. I felt alone, not understood and completely hopeless. I still cry about it 7 years later. From that point, I scheduled an appointment for the deep cleaning, being told that it would buy me some time. I completed the deep cleaning and then never went back. Dr. Blank NEVER called to check on me, NEVER called to see if I wanted to schedule any other appointments, NOTHING! For the past 7 years, I went way back into denial...scared that if I made another attempt to restore the health of my mouth, I would be shoved back into that horrible place of despair (I am not being dramatic, this is really how I felt). Recently, it became very evident that I had to do something. I was in horrible pain and just knew that the findings would be much worse. After very carefully choosing another Periodontist, I began this journey again. I just learned today that my prognosis is not nearly as bleak as Dr. Blank lead me to believe. Yes, I will have to loose some teeth, but this Periodontist is willing to be patient and go through a treatment process that I can live with. He will present several options and his staff will hold my hand the entire way. This was never an option with Dr. Blank. I firmly believe now that Dr. Blank lacks patience and compassion.
